Safety Training Woodworking was set up to respond to the needs of the woodworking industry by John Gubb in 1994. John had, for the previous 20 years, been involved in the education and training of woodcutting machinists, joinery and furniture makers whilst retaining a link with industry and research. He remained up to date with both industry and education.

Collaborative ventures with the Health and Safety Executive and local companies resulted in Safety Training Woodworking taking part in the safety video “The Cutting Edge” and providing supporting information for the HSE and others in the legal proceedings.

After 22 years running Safety Training Woodworking, John Gubb is now retiring and handing over the baton to me, Damian Smith, who will continue to use the name Safety Training Woodworking and strive to carry forward the name and reputation to make training count.

I first met John almost 22 years ago whilst doing a wood machinist apprenticeship, with a National Timber Merchant, where he was production mill based. John passed a lot of his knowledge and experience on to me which set me on the path into the woodworking industry.

I have remained in the woodworking industry and have continued to build on his knowledge and experience of woodworking machinery, processes and regulations.  In 2013 our paths crossed again whilst working for a local woodworking machinery supplier and studying for my Teacher Training Level 3 Award course.  We remain good friends and John will continue to support and pass on his knowledge of training in the industry to me.

It is a privilege and pleasure to be taking over Safety Training Woodworking and continue with John’s original goal of understanding the needs of the employer. Focusing all courses around the demand of your productive environment, conducting individually tailored sessions and provide work based training of the safe and productive use of woodworking machinery.
